FACTS

The following academic positions are currently available in higher education:

Fixed-term employment contracts:

  • Postdoc, 2 years. Obtained within two years of a doctorate, excluding time taken for parental leave etc.
  • Career development position, 4 years. Regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance. Several seats of learning have chosen to introduce the career-development positions of research fellow and assistant lecturer, the latter providing an opportunity as a trial for a permanent position.
  • Researchers. Not regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance, but comply with the Employment Protection Act, LAS.

Permanent positions:

  • Lecturer
  • Senior lecturer
  • Professor

Footnote: The previous career development positions of research fellow and assistant lecturer were removed from the Higher Education Ordinance in 2011. They were replaced by general fixed-term career development positions that seats of learning can regulate locally. The position of research fellow was intended mainly for qualification in research. Assistant lecturer was aimed at qualification in both research and teaching, and provided an opportunity for employment as lecturer.
